    RIPPED TO SHREDS Call Out MASTER For Playing Festival With Neo-Nazi Bands, Cancel Show & Cut Ties With Booking Agency

    Bay Area death metal band Ripped To Shreds have taken a firm stance against fellow death metal veterans Master, publicly calling them out for performing at a recent festival featuring bands tied to neo-Nazi affiliations.

    The event in question is believed to be the ‘Metal Threat’ festival, held this past weekend in Chicago, IL. The festival faced widespread backlash after several bands withdrew due to visa and scheduling issues — as well as criticism over the inclusion of acts linked to the NSBM scene. Among those bookings was Arghoslent, a band widely condemned for racist themes in their music.

    While Arghoslent performed on October 3rd and Master took the stage two days later, Ripped To Shreds made it clear they view Master’s participation in the same festival as unacceptable.

    The two bands were originally scheduled to share a bill later this week at 924 Gilman St. in Berkeley, CA, but that show has now been canceled following Master’s appearance at Metal Threat. Ripped To Shreds have also announced they are parting ways with their booking agency, Heavy Talent, over the situation.

    In a statement shared to social media on October 6th, Ripped To Shreds wrote:

    “Refusing to play with a neo-Nazi band like Arghoslent that glorifies the Black slave trade is the lowest possible bar, and Master still failed it, so we’re withdrawing from Friday’s show at @924gilmanstreet. Support to @bitterendbooking for doing the right thing and canceling the show. We’re still leaving Heavy Talent, but I’d like to clarify that Heavy Talent only reps Sinister. The Sinister and Master tour was booked as a package, and Master booked their show with Metal Threat directly through Paul Dunski, not through Heavy Talent.”

    Frontman Andrew Lee also recently released a video addressing issues of white supremacy within the heavy metal community, where he discussed the ongoing ‘Metal Threat’ controversy in further detail.

          The difference between Halloween and a snuff film is the creator of the snuff film is in favor of the contents. The difference between the violence in a random death metal song and Arghoslent’s actual, confirmed, real-life racism is the same thing. Arghoslent writes their lyrics because they’re in favor of what they’re writing about. It’s not a secret that they’re racist. Most death metal musicians, though, are just random guys with normal lives and no violent tendencies. They’re no more in favor of murder than John Carpenter is.

On top of them, the following bands couldn’t get in because of visas but were scheduled: Horna, Satanic Warmaster, and Destroyer 666. Look up Inquisition also and that band’s gross issues. They are very well known as an NSBM band and Rob Darken has made a lot of statements that make it really obvious. Somehow Grand Belial’s Key seemed to be one of the less bad NSBM bands there, but I think their vocalist could barely stand, let alone have much dialogue with the crowd.

          Jm Cave care to share any of these old interviews that I’ve somehow missed. Also, while I don’t really listen to Cannibal Corpse much, from my understanding that was taken before their 2nd album when it became clear what their views were. I don’t live too far from Corpsegrinder and he comes out to a lot of shows around Tampa and always is as sweet as can be. I’d be truly shocked to find out he knew their views when that photo was taken.

          Edit: I looked into the magazine he’s holding and it’s from May 1996, before Arghoslent’s first album was even released.

        Mike Hamley Visa issues and some claimed other reasons, but there’s a lot of folks that found things saying they just weren’t going to play the same fest as bands like Arghoslent, so they made up excuses to get out of it cause they didn’t want to lose fans by saying they didn’t want to play with the more extreme NSBM bands.

        Matt Salard there’s so much amazing black metal and it just blows my mind anyone thinks GBK is a good band. I truly think sometimes it’s just edgelords claiming to like them. Meanwhile their vocalist had to hold up a lyric sheet and had to keep stopping to catch his breath.

        While I’m not much for Deicide, I think there’s a pretty big difference between him and the literal white supremacists and neo-nazis. There’s plenty of bands who I disagree with politically, but I’m not going to support bands that say “6 million wasn’t enough” like Engorge’s vocalist did a couple days ago.

          They are a tiny percentage of bands/music. They have a tiny fan base. It’s fine to call them out and refuse to go to their shows and refuse to let them into your festival, or whatever, if they are actual neo-Nazi/WS bands.

          Just stop lumping bands who ARE NOT in with the ones who are.

          That’s woke cancel culture bullshit.

          You also have to be aware that not everyone knows what bands are NSBM and which are not. This is the most likely way these bands get onto these festivals, or have a bigger fan base than they’d have if ppl knew.

          BM lyrics are basically indecipherable. You have to read the lyrics to see what they are saying 90% of the time. Not everyone studies lyrics. So you have to cut some of these promoters, etc, some slack. Once they KNOW they are Nazi/WS, then you can condemn them if they still support them.

          Until then, pump the brakes a bit before you accuse.

          Jim Burwell I’m sorry, but this last bit is a bit nuts. The promoters do the research into booking bands and curate the line-up. It’s not exactly a business secret that the frontman of Inquisition was convicted on child pornography offences, or that bands like Grand Belial’s Key are openly Neo-Nazis, if you’re booking a black metal event.

          Similarly, every band that dropped/had a visa cancelled was replaced by an outright Neo-Nazi or Far-Right band. There’s no way the promoter did this by accident, when you have the entire US metal scene to pluck from.

          Punters can definitely not realise and find out later but the scope of what was booked was on par with some of the largest Neo-Nazi metal events that have occurred, with little to no representation of anything else.

          Christopher Pack I will say also, that at the point when he did the rant outside The Rub, he was no longer in Morbid Angel. Still, even when he was, I remember seeing him signing stuff after a show during the Covenant touring cycle and giving a dude a thumbs up and a grin for his tattoo of an intertwined cross and swastika.         Geert Struyven I feel like most folks commenting didn’t actually dig into what happened. The reason Master got looped in was they were supposed to play a show with them and decided not to. They also dropped their booking company as a result.

        Personally, if I were in a band, I’d have never played Metal Threat because there were just way too many bands that go against everything I stand for and I choose not to give those bands money.

        I think sometimes folks take things too far, like what happened with Taake. I think even bands I disagree with have a right to play and say all their hateful stuff, I just don’t want to be associated with it. There’s just way too much amazing metal for me to waste my time with bands that a very clearly racist, antisemitic, etc.

          I think everyone wants peace, but I don’t think many Americans have really dug into the situation until recently. I’ve always support Israelis as a whole, but never supported certain individuals. I remember like 15 years ago seeing a video of Netanyahu saying something about how easy it was to push America into doing whatever he wanted and that never sat well with me. I always thought it was really gross to keep taking more and more land on the West Bank bank because folks in the Israeli government would just decide to make laws saying that Palestinians living there had to do certain things with their land and get permits to build houses or they could just seize their land. None of that excuses harming people, but I don’t think I’m antisemitic by disagreeing with a government. I feel for the innocent people who never wanted this and hate Hamas for making all of this so much worse. I fully believe Netanyahu let this happen though because he’s made several comments about how he would allow Qatari funds to keep going to Hamas to try and prevent the West Bank from establishing a Palestinian state since the Palestinian Authority was trying to work towards that.

          Dessdemon Webb I have seen more recent interviews and while they have changed a bit, basically everything I’ve read has been them still saying they don’t support the killing of innocent people and they feel for the Palestinians and Israelis that have been victims of this.

          Again, most of the folks that are saying to “free Palestine” aren’t hating on the average Israeli and a large number of Israelis have been very very vocal against their government.

          I’d also encourage you to look into some of the things some folks in Netanyahu’s cabinet have said, especially folks like Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir.

          I think it’s really more that some folks grew up in more extreme religious environments than others. It’s honestly wild to me how many Christians act like their religion is so different from Islam, yet in all reality, the Christian Bible says the same thing, anyone who hasn’t accepted Jesus is going to burn in hell, which includes Jewish people, so by your logic, all Christians would be antisemitic.

          I will say that I live in the US and I watched a lot of Muslims go through absolute hell after 9/11. To this day I see people say that all Muslims are terrorists and all kinds of terrible things. While I’m more agnostic than anything, I feel for the folks that get accused of things by association.

          China in the 90s too.

          plenty of bands there and fans…. dont dismiss ther contributions both locally and internationally… especially given that some of these acts shaped internatonal scenes… and some shaped their respective scenes today.

          Sarcofago has been round since the 80s and is a prominent and widely respected band…. and to my knowledge have never played the US… its doesn’t mean they’re not legends… and I bet theres bands in the US right now that would give anything to reach that status.

This is the same reductio ad absurdum argument that comes up every time this subject is discussed. It’s basically a less good-faith way of saying “where do you draw the line”. But not condoning festivals that promote racist bands is a pretty clear-cut line to draw. If you want to scour YouTube for old concert footage to see who used gay slurs, be my guest, but no reasonable person is ever going to hold anyone up to that standard. Nobody is ever aiming for perfection. But this is low-hanging fruit. It’s absurd, which is why the logical fallacy is called reductio ad absurdum.

          Metal bands from all over the world are heavily influenced by white-centric American and European scenes. Some scenes actively try to bring an indigenous flare, but that’s rare. Metal is a genre that is rooted in white identity and the influence of white musicians (even if it was built off of the blues). There would be no Filipino metal scene without Venom and Celtic Frost, etc. That’s probably never going to change. Just like the blues is still rooted in the culture from which it sprang.

        Shawn M. Johnson The state body of Israel is not “Jews” or Jewish people in general. The vast, vast, vast majority of people who support Palestine have nothing against Jews but rather was the state body of Israel is doing. Any attempts to conflate that with antisemitism is, at best, extremely intellectually dishonest.

Israel has a governmental body that operates in the real world, and it cannot be shielded from all criticism by calling it antisemitic.

      I feel its time for me to clarify my position as well. When I bought my ticket for Metal Threat, I knew that there were far right/sketch/nationalist bands playing. Then I found something out that should have impacted my decision, and I take full responsibility for it. Turns out there were some bands on the bill that people do NOT find offensive. Fully knowing this, I still attended. I would like to apologize to anyone I let down. 😔 please forgive me. Please don’t call me tolerant or woke or pro-lgbtqia+, or any deeply insulting slurs.
