Set Your Goals have continued their comeback with the release of “Big Couch,” their second new song in more than 15 years.
The track arrived online October 1, following “Accelerate,” which surfaced in July as the band’s first new material since their extended hiatus. At the time, Set Your Goals announced a 7-inch release pairing the two songs, with “Big Couch” serving as the B-side.
The band described the new track as a progression in their songwriting while acknowledging that it takes a somewhat different emotional approach from their previous material.
“This song feels like the logical next step in the progression of our songwriting as a band. Stylistically, it is a bit of an outlier with a heavier dose of emotional content, which is also what makes it so special to us.”
Lyrically, “Big Couch” centers on growing older and finding yourself in a position where younger people look to you as a role model. The band said the song explores the responsibility that comes with that position and the effort to make choices that won’t disappoint those who look up to you.
The recording itself was also a collaborative affair, with members of the band’s families contributing to the track. Producer Scott‘s children can be heard on the recording, while his wife Ashley and several friends contributed vocals during the final chorus.
“Crafting this song was a communal effort, which included the sounds of some of the band’s and our producer Scott’s children playing. We even enlisted a few friends to help out with vocals on the last chorus, including Scott’s wife, Ashley.”
The arrival of “Big Couch” comes as Set Your Goals kick off their “Mutiny!” 20th anniversary tour. The initial run features The Warriors, performing ‘War Is Hell’, alongside Restraining Order and Stateside.
