Shinedown vocalist Brent Smith has spoken out regarding the controversy surrounding his band’s planned involvement with the annual ‘Rock The Country’ festival. Earlier this month, the multi-platinum hard rock outfit withdrew from the touring festival, citing intense social media pushback and the potential for division among fans.
The festival, led by Kid Rock, has been widely viewed as a politically charged, MAGA-oriented bill due to the frequent booking of artists aligned with Republican-held beliefs. While Shinedown were not the first artist to exit the 2026 lineup, drummer Barry Kerch’s public comment calling rapper Ludacris a “coward” for withdrawing shortly after being announced only intensified fan discourse.
In an official statement on February 6th, Shinedown clarified their reasoning:
“SHINEDOWN is everyone’s band. We feel that we have been given a platform to bring all people together through the power of music and song.
We have one BOSS, and it is everyone in the audience. Our band’s purpose is to unite, not divide. With that in mind, we have made the decision that we will not be playing the Rock The Country Festival.
We know this decision will create differences of opinion. But we do not want to participate in something we believe will create further division.
And to our fans, thank you for supporting and believing in us.
We love and appreciate you always.
All love and respect,
SHINEDOWN”
The band’s withdrawal had immediate effects on the festival, with the planned July 25th–26th stop in Anderson, SC canceled shortly afterward. That two-date outing had slated Creed to headline the opening date, with Shinedown headlining the second.
In a new Rolling Stone interview, Smith elaborated on the decision and its reception:
“We saw infighting that we had never seen before, and for us, it was our job to diffuse it.”
Smith also reflected on the fan reactions, noting:
“There were certain people that were not happy about [pulling back.] I will say that there was an overwhelming amount of people that agreed with the decision.… You’re entitled to your opinion 1,000 percent in this country, and that’s one of the beautiful things about it.”
Identifying himself as neither a Democrat nor Republican, Smith emphasized unity and understanding across differences of gender, skin color, religion, and sexual orientation:
“That is what makes you who you are, and we are all on this planet, and we occupy it together.”
Touching on political cooperation, he floated the idea that bipartisan leadership could help heal divisions in the U.S.:
“If you’re a Democrat, why can’t you have a Republican for your running mate?”
As fans digest this commentary, Shinedown also recently announced their eighth studio album, ‘EI8HT’, along with an extensive North American and European tour in support of the record.

Respectfully handled.
Hack
They knew what they were getting into when they agreed to play.
Amy Cardinal and its normal for somebody to change their fuckings minds
Redneck
Amy Cardinal I don’t believe anyone can know the fall out from anything these days! Lord knows you sneeze in the wrong direction and people are coming for ya! It’s really sad.
Omg, no, they didn’t. Their manager sets up tours for them. Not the artist
I’ve seen them 15 times and will probably see them still, but I lost a lot of respect for them when they caved in to the left. I’m sure they don’t care but just stating my opinion on this.
Keith Ward Sr call him out on his “We have one boss” speech. I am not going to see them or buy this album. I didn’t go to the last tour either. I don’t like the tv head thing, I HATE country music, and i have lost respect for them.
F them. Will never spend another penny on them.
This story is not important… it’s one show
Scott Rogers it’s one festival. Several locations. Not just one show. But I agree it’s not important.
Vanessa Austin Shinedown was only scheduled for one show. Anderson, South Carolina. That’s it. One show of a two day festival. One performance, on location, not the entire tour. Fact check it.
Scott Rogers, there are a lot of event workers that would disagree with you. They canceled the entire SC event because of Shinedown backing out.
Justin Mock Yeah, I agree. Bummer for them and the City. I heard there were other things going on and Kid said pull it, not worth the aggravation. Too bad.
Scott Rogers Ikr.. let’s move on. Tour and album just announced why must they keep justifying their decision.
Michelle Ann Watts That was my original comment. “This story is not important… It’s one show.” I had nothing to do with the original post.
A very elegant neutralization and a response of ‘Safe and Sound’! – to my mind
This band is nobodies beeeeatch they believe in being the best humam being you can be no matter what we can face hard times together
Awwwwwwwwwwwwww
Why are people upset at them for caring about their country and their fans?
Kate Lucas, because they had already agreed to play these events. Them backing out cause the entire SC event to be cancelled. I’m sure there are a lot of event workers that would have liked to have gotten paid…
Justin Mock if the event workers were that concerned about getting paid they wouldn’t have chosen to work for a pedophile.
Kate Lucas, hahahahahahaha….. so they shouldn’t work for democrats???? Got it. Fucking clown….
Justin Mock kid rock is actually republican and according to those pesky files its also mostly Republicans including your favorite president
Kate Lucas, the President that turned Epstein in????? Hahahahahahahahahaha….. you, conveniently, seem to ignore the Clintons…..
Justin Mock the president that participated. He turned him in after Epstein stole one of trumps workers that’s it.
I freaking love this band!!!! 💜 💜💜💜 Haters gonna hate, not me😉Media: https://scontent-lax3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.1997-6/93200015_222645569067947_4799140329917775872_n.png?_nc_cat=1&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=23dd7b&_nc_ohc=FJZvAyyW5rkQ7kNvwHHd9c_&_nc_oc=AdkRSy2j17ZM633Q-i9yb3TKQSaOu0brJQblezFQ6BKPln3Jn0RPFAh4EPJPAoBX_wA&_nc_zt=26&_nc_ht=scontent-lax3-1.xx&edm=AOerShkEAAAA&_nc_gid=adLzkTkHQS_F7uWQ0f1GyA&_nc_tpa=Q5bMBQEmwWRFvsYjIavpzcrccEkavC8q3Pl9ll44nsk_Ex6APdf2MZREU-nlR_vpGb1gXWP0emHJ8fpFyg&oh=00_Afse2u6T4EJtXRm2MnerWltXwnzrEeUnBoRqZjPXJbudqw&oe=699BD6E5
