The hardcore community is mourning the loss of Sick Of It All vocalist Lou Koller, who has passed away following a battle with esophageal cancer.
News of Koller’s death was confirmed by the veteran New York hardcore band, who shared a heartfelt statement paying tribute to their longtime frontman and friend. Koller had been publicly battling cancer for the past two years, with fans and fellow musicians across the world rallying behind him through fundraising efforts and messages of support.
In their statement, the band reflected on Koller’s lasting impact both on and off the stage.
“It’s with unbelievable sadness that we announce to our worldwide hardcore family the passing of our brother Lou Koller. The level of loss that we feel at this time is overwhelming.
This year would have marked Sick Of It All’s 40th anniversary as a band, and Lou’s camaraderie, commitment and enthusiasm were always steadfast throughout the years. We have lost a beloved friend and an iconic frontman.
Lou had the power to raise everyone’s spirits at our shows with a smile and a sarcastic comment, and he won people over wherever we played, from every culture and every corner of the world.
At this time of intense grief, we must again acknowledge the great help and support offered by everyone who donated to Lou’s medical fund. You all helped Lou feel very special and very loved as he battled away these last two years. His battle is over now and he can finally rest. Hopefully he can somehow still see and feel the beautiful, positive mark he left on the world.”
Formed in 1986, Sick Of It All became one of the most influential bands in hardcore history, helping bring New York hardcore to audiences around the globe through albums such as Blood, Sweat and No Tears, Scratch the Surface, Built to Last and Yours Truly. Throughout the band’s nearly four-decade run, Koller remained one of the genre’s most recognizable and respected frontmen.
His passing comes during what would have been Sick Of It All’s 40th anniversary year. Beyond his contributions to hardcore music, Koller was widely admired for his resilience, humor and unwavering connection with fans throughout his career.
