The Smashing Pumpkins are marking the 30th anniversary of ‘The Aeroplane Flies High’ with a new vinyl reissue, while also celebrating major new U.S. certifications for two of the band’s most successful albums.
Originally released in 1996 as a companion box set to ‘Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness’, ‘The Aeroplane Flies High’ will return on vinyl on December 18. Pre-orders are now available.
The anniversary reissue arrives as The Smashing Pumpkins continue their current run of shows commemorating 30 years of ‘Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness’ on the The Rats In A Cage Tour.
The band also picked up two significant new certifications in the United States on October 2.
‘Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness’, which was previously certified diamond, has now reached 11x platinum status. The album had not received a new certification since achieving diamond status in August 2012.
Meanwhile, the band’s 1993 sophomore album ‘Siamese Dream’ has been certified 7x platinum, more than three decades after its original release. Its previous certification was 4x platinum, awarded in January 1996.
In the U.S., platinum certification represents 1 million units, while gold represents 500,000 units. Modern certifications also account for streaming and digital consumption, with streams and permanent downloads contributing toward album and track-equivalent units.
