Summer Of Peril, a rising Colorado shoegaze/grunge-gaze outfit, are currently facing a deeply serious situation outside of music. According to Westword, bassistMarcos Flores has been held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody for more than a month, following his detention late last year.
Flores is currently being held at the Aurora ICE Detention Center, which has reportedly been operating near capacity amid an uptick in federal immigration enforcement actions across Colorado. According to reports, Flores was taken into custody on December 23 while attempting to obtain a visitor badge for contract work at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. ICE agents were allegedly waiting for him at the site.
Legal representation for Flores has stated that it remains unclear how ICE obtained information regarding his whereabouts. Flores, who was born in Mexico, was brought to the United States as a young child and has reportedly spent nearly his entire life in the U.S., to the extent that he does not remember living anywhere else.
In the weeks following his detention, Flores’ bandmates, friends, and family organized public support efforts, including a GoFundMe campaign to assist with mounting legal fees. That fundraiser raised close to $30,000 within a matter of weeks. Additional support has also come from Colorado’s local music scene, with benefit events being organized to raise awareness and financial assistance.
As part of those efforts, Summer Of Peril are scheduled to perform a benefit show on Thursday, February 19th at Soundbar in Fort Collins, Colorado. The show will feature support from Wolfblitzer, Suicide Cages, Banglore, and Rukkus, with proceeds expected to go toward Flores’ legal defense.
Flores appeared for an initial bond hearing on January 16, with dozens of supporters arriving in solidarity. However, only two individuals were ultimately permitted inside the courtroom, despite prior confirmation that more attendees would be allowed.
According to Flores’ attorney, a recent policy shift issued by the Office of the Chief Immigration Judge directly impacted the outcome of the hearing. The updated guidance reportedly reversed prior protections that limited the use of no-bond detentions. As a result, Flores’ request for bond was denied without explanation, meaning he will remain in ICE custody while his case proceeds through the legal system.
The situation has drawn attention from civil rights advocates and members of Colorado’s music community, with ongoing calls for Flores’ release continuing to circulate online.
