Sunn O))) have officially announced their first new full-length album since 2019. The influential drone metal duo will release a self-titled record, Sunn O))), on April 3 via Sub Pop.
The album marks the band’s tenth studio effort overall and was co-produced and mixed by the group alongside Brad Wood (Sunny Day Real Estate, Hum). It is being previewed today with the release of the new single “Glory Black.”
Guitarist Stephen O’Malley explained that the album represents a notable shift in how the band approached recording this time around.
“On this album for the first time all of the instrumentation was performed by Greg and I. All of the records have our leadership and direction, of course, but this time around, it was almost like this crucible of ideas that was really at the core of what we’ve been doing.”
Fellow founding member Greg Anderson expanded on how their recent live evolution influenced the studio process.
“What’s been happening with our performances over the last couple years with the two of us and no other collaborators or players has been really fresh and exciting. There’s been a lot of development. A lot of that was unexpected. And a lot of things that happened in the studio were really exciting and different from what we had been playing live, as well.”
Sunn O))) track listing:
