SUNN O))) Sign With Sub Pop, Surprise Release New EP

Drone metal titans Sunn O))) have announced their signing to Sub Pop Records and marked the occasion with a surprise new EP, featuring the tracks “Eternity’s Pillars,” “Raise the Chalice,” and “Reverential.”

Tracked alongside co-producer Brad Wood, the release was recorded across sessions at Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville and Sea Grass in Los Angeles. The EP marks the first official studio recordings to feature only founding members Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson, focusing entirely on their signature heavily saturated guitars and analog synthesis.

The band shared the following statement:

“Eternity’s Pillars b/w Raise the Chalice & Reverential is Sunn O)))’s premier work on the maxi 12” medium for Sub Pop.

It consists of three brand new tracks created and performed by the iconic duo and co-produced by Sunn O))) and Brad Wood. Each tone, level of saturation, gain stage, and harmonic was given extreme care and attention. The Pacific Northwest forest is our guide.”

They also revealed the inspirations behind each song:

• “Eternity’s Pillars” takes its name from the mid-1980s TV program by jazz visionary Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, centered on music’s spiritual power.
• “Raise the Chalice” references a rallying cry from Northwest punk legend Ron Guardipee in the ’90s.
• “Reverential” serves as a tribute to artistic pioneers who carried the heaviest creative burdens.

The EP’s cover art, photographed by Charles Peterson, captures the duo in the forests northeast of Seattle.

Physical editions will arrive later this year: Gold vinyl via Sub Pop and clear vinyl via Sunn O)))’s web store.

The group is currently touring Europe, with dates running through early November.
