Nü-core outfit Tallah have announced their upcoming album, Primeval: Obsession // Detachment, set for release on September 5th via Earache Records. The band has introduced the record with its first single, “What We Know,” which arrives alongside a music video. Additionally, a second video is in the works, as the band recently put out a casting call for it.
Bassist Max Portnoy shared his thoughts on the track, calling it his favorite Tallah song to date:
“The first song written for the album, and easily my #1 Tallah song to date. The experimentation on this track set the tone for the entire record—acoustic guitars in the first half, trap-metal 808s layered over a string quartet with dissonant plucks in the chorus, and a guitar solo featuring a talkbox and a slide. We incorporated so many different elements, yet it never feels disjointed. It’s a high-energy track with a massive chorus, and it was a no-brainer to kick off the record with this one.”
Produced by Josh Schroeder (Lorna Shore, King 810), Primeval: Obsession // Detachment is a concept album that takes place on an alien planet. Vocalist Justin Bonitz explained the storyline:
“The album follows two characters—Ana, a nurse, and Sheelah, an assassin—who are both approached by the same group of beings. Each is given a task that will push their morals and values to the limit, leading to a series of twists and turns. The album explores themes of morality, duty, personal beliefs, duality, and understanding one’s place in society.”
Portnoy further elaborated on the album’s creative approach:
“For me, this album is Tallah truly finding our voice. There were no boxes or rules—just whatever felt uniquely us. I don’t even know how to label this record beyond just ‘Tallah.’ It’s weird, experimental, high-energy, and raw. We recorded everything live, every instrument at the same time, with no click track—just like we do at shows. That’s how we wanted it to sound.”
Bonitz also revealed an impressive feat while recording vocals for the album:
“I practiced for months and recorded the entire album in one continuous take—no edits, no redos—while recovering from pneumonia! Nobody’s gonna believe me! It was the highlight of my vocal career. I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off, but I stepped into the booth, grabbed an SM57, turned off the lights, and just let it happen. The flaws and imperfections make it feel more intimate and raw, which is exactly what this album needed.”
