Dutch progressive metalcore veterans Textures have officially returned with their first new music since reuniting in late 2023. The band’s brand-new single, “Closer to the Unknown”, has launched online today, marking a long-awaited comeback for one of the genre’s most innovative forces.
The track was produced internally by guitarist Bart Hennephof and keyboardist Uri Dijk, both of whom have played a crucial role in shaping the band’s signature style. Hennephof, who also handled production and artwork on Polars, and Dijk, whose atmospheric synth work has defined the band’s sound since 2010, help deliver a tightly constructed, rhythmically intense song that stays true to the band’s progressive roots.
This new release comes in the wake of tragedy, following the loss of founding vocalist Pieter Verpaalen, who passed away in August 2024. Verpaalen fronted the band from 2002 to 2004 and contributed lyrics to early fan favorites like “Swandive”. The band previously paid tribute to his legacy, emphasizing his impact on both their early direction and the wider Dutch metal scene.
After teasing their return at festivals like ‘South Of Heaven‘, Textures have now unleashed a track that delivers exactly what longtime fans have hoped for: intricate grooves, dense layering, and emotionally charged vocals. Clocking in at just over four minutes, “Closer to the Unknown” is a bold and focused statement that reaffirms their place in modern metal.
The current lineup includes vocalist Daniël de Jongh, guitarists Bart Hennephof and Joe Tal, bassist Remko Tielemans, keyboardist Uri Dijk, and drummer Stef Broks—a group whose chemistry previously drove landmark records like Dualism and Phenotype.
While there’s no word yet on a full album, this new single strongly suggests that a new era for Textures has officially begun.
