Ola Englund, best known as the guitarist for The Haunted, has addressed online comparisons between a riff in Evanescence’s new single “Who Will You Follow” and his own 2020 solo track “The Sun & The Moon.”
In a recent breakdown video, Englund directly compared both tracks after claims surfaced online suggesting the Evanescence riff may have been lifted or closely inspired by his earlier work with The Haunted guitarist also highlighting the discussion spreading across social media.
Englund plays both riffs back-to-back in the video, noting that while the tempo and rhythmic structure are extremely similar, the actual riff idea itself falls within a common style used throughout modern metal and rock production.
Ultimately, the guitarist concludes that although the similarities are noticeable at first listen, the material is too generic to be considered plagiarism, and not distinctive enough to claim ownership.
The discussion has since sparked wider debate around how often riff structures overlap in modern heavy music, especially within tightly defined subgenres where rhythmic phrasing frequently converges across different artists.
