German post-metal collective The Ocean have unveiled the second preview from their upcoming studio album Solaris, releasing the new single “Belligerence.”
Set for release on September 25 through the band’s own Pelagic Records, Solaris takes inspiration from Andrei Tarkovsky’s iconic 1972 science fiction film of the same name while exploring themes of exploration, power, human nature, and the consequences of technological advancement.
According to the band, the new single examines the destructive nature of conflict and anger.
The Ocean stated:
“‘Belligerence’ is a song about the culture of arguing and about the destructive force of contained anger and belligerence as a trait of character, often transfigured as an attribute of reason and a critical mind.”
A press release describes Solaris as a conceptual journey centered around cosmic escape, following a spacecraft leaving a collapsing Earth behind.
“Solaris” is an album that tells a story of cosmic escapism: journey on that ship, which is essentially a celestial rescue boat escaping from a metaphorically sinking Mother Earth.
The album draws parallels between historic explorers such as Da Gama, Magellan, Sir Francis Drake, Amundsen, and Scott, examining the ambition, discovery, conflict, and consequences tied to humanity’s pursuit of the unknown.
Rather than celebrating conquest, Solaris explores the darker side of exploration, questioning ideas surrounding leadership, power, technological progress, and humanity’s impact on the planet.
The album will also introduce a dramatically revamped lineup for The Ocean, featuring new vocalists Enrico Tiberi and Lane Shi, along with new guitarists Emmanuel Jessua and Marco Gennaro.
To support the release, the band have announced a European tour this fall featuring Psychonaut, Hypno5e, The Devil’s Trade, and Pothamus on select dates.
