The Ocean have officially unveiled their rebuilt lineup and announced details for their upcoming studio album, ‘Solaris’, marking the beginning of a new era for the long-running post-metal collective.
The announcement follows a turbulent stretch for the band throughout 2025, which saw the departures of vocalist Loïc Rossetti, drummer Paul Seidel, and guitarist David Ramis Åhfeldt around a series of farewell performances for that incarnation of the group.
Now led into a new chapter by founding guitarist/vocalist Robin Staps, The Ocean have introduced several new members to the fold. Vocalists Enrico Tiberi (ex-EyeHate) and Lane Shi (Elizabeth Colour Wheel, Otay:onii) have joined the band alongside guitarists Emmanuel Jessua (Hypno5e) and Marco Gennaro. Returning members Mattias Hägerstrand and Jordi Farré remain in place on bass and drums respectively.
The band’s new album, ‘Solaris’, is scheduled for release on September 25th through Pelagic Records and draws inspiration from Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1972 sci-fi film of the same name.
Alongside the announcement, the group debuted the nearly ten-minute single “Light Pollution,” accompanied by a new video directed by Craig Murray (Mogwai, Converge).
According to the band, the song examines humanity’s growing dependence on technology and the blurred lines between reality and simulation in the modern world.
Robin Staps elaborated on the song’s themes in a statement:
“We’ve witnessed several communication revolutions throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, but have we actually become any better at communicating?”
“Has there really been forward movement, or has the motion been orbital — have we merely been treading water?”
“Light pollution symbolizes the transparency of the postmodern age, permeating everything and everyone. Everything is constantly visible; we’ve lost the darkness to hide in, and with the relentless glare of communication, we’ve also lost our privacy.”
Additional contributors on the album include Thorsten Quaeschning of Tangerine Dream on synths, Orestis Zafiriou on keys, Simen Eifring on trombone, and Jiawei Zhang on vibraphone. Mixing and mastering duties were handled by Jens Bogren.
