As I Lay Dying frontman Tim Lambesis has addressed backlash sparked by a recent social media comment that appeared to downplay the contributions of his former bandmates.
In the exchange, which Lambesis reportedly highlighted on his own Instagram story, the vocalist replied to a fan who mentioned missing the band’s “old members.” His initial response read:
“There are still a couple Wovenwar records if you want to hear what they do without me. Otherwise, if you close your eyes and listen to the new song it’s almost like they didn’t matter nearly as much as everyone thinks they did. I hope you’re able to enjoy the path ahead with us.”
The remark quickly made rounds online, with many interpreting it as a slight toward former As I Lay Dying members Phil Sgrosso, Nick Hipa, Josh Gilbert, and Jordan Mancino — the lineup that defined the band’s most successful run from 2003 to 2014. That era ended after Lambesis’ 2013 arrest and subsequent prison sentence for attempting to hire a hitman to murder his then-wife.
Following his imprisonment, the remaining members went on to form Wovenwar with Shane Blay (Oh, Sleeper), before reuniting with Lambesis after his parole. However, that reunion dissolved around 2020 amid renewed controversy surrounding Lambesis, leading most of the lineup to once again part ways.
Lambesis and Sgrosso later rebuilt As I Lay Dying with new members, though that iteration also fell apart in late 2024. Earlier this month, Lambesis introduced an all-new lineup and released the band’s latest single, “Echoes.”
After fan reaction grew, Lambesis added context to his earlier remarks, seemingly walking them back. In the same Instagram story, he captioned the post:
“Just having fun, I’m not that serious. But I hope people can listen to music with their ears instead of their eyes.”
Whether the original comment was intended as humor or not, Lambesis’ clarification appears aimed at cooling tensions among fans still divided over the band’s turbulent history.
