Tobias Forge has revisited his death metal roots, bringing his former band Repugnant back together for a new performance of “Premature Burial” featured in the latest installment of the V/H/S horror anthology franchise.
‘V/H/S/Mixtape’, the ninth entry in the series, began streaming on Shudder on October 9. Alongside appearances and contributions from GWAR and other notable musicians, the film features a newly produced music video for Repugnant’s “Premature Burial,” originally released in 2003.
The updated performance also brings an intriguing change to the lineup, with Watain frontman Erik Danielsson handling vocal duties. Danielsson and Forge have been friends for years, making his involvement a notable addition to the revived version of the track.
Forge previously fronted Repugnant, whose last run ended in 2011 before his work with Ghost propelled him to international recognition. The new recording sees him return to the death metal project alongside guitarist Gottfrid Åhman, bassist Gustaf Lindström — who also previously played with Ghost — and drummer Thomas Daun.
The appearance arrives amid reports that Forge has been working on a separate death metal project, adding further intrigue to his return to the genre. However, the new performance does not necessarily signal a full-time Repugnant reunion, and the band’s future remains unclear.
The timing is also notable given Forge’s recent comments about stepping away from Ghost for an extended period. Whether this Repugnant revival develops into something more than a one-off appearance remains to be seen.
For now, fans can catch the newly filmed performance of “Premature Burial” in ‘V/H/S/Mixtape’ on Shudder.
