Following the passing of his mother Mary Morello at the age of 102 on July 12, 2026, Tom Morello has launched a new initiative aimed at continuing her lifelong commitment to activism, public service, and social justice.
The Mary Morello Memorial Project was unveiled on July 20, with the Rage Against The Machine guitarist encouraging supporters not only to donate to causes his mother championed, but also to become actively involved in their own communities.
Mary Morello was a respected activist and educator whose advocacy work spanned decades. Among her many efforts, she was known for founding Parents For Rock And Rap, an anti-censorship organization established during the late 1980s in response to growing efforts to restrict artistic expression.
Announcing the project on social media, Morello invited friends, family, and supporters to help preserve his mother’s legacy through both charitable giving and direct action.
“The Morello Family invites friends, family, and all those whose lives were touched by Mary Morello to honor her memory by helping to keep her legacy of compassion, courage and service alive.”
“Donations to the Mary Morello Memorial Project will support organizations that were deeply meaningful to Mary throughout her life, and reflect the causes she passionately believed in and was proud to work alongside.”
Beyond fundraising efforts, Morello also called on supporters to participate in activism and community service leading up to what would have been Mary’s 103rd birthday on October 1.
“But we also invite you to ‘do as Mary did’, and engage first hand in CARING, SERVICE & ACTION.”
“Between now and Oct. 1st (which would have been Mary’s 103rd birthday) get out there and DO SOMETHING: volunteer, protest, speak up, speak out, walk a picket line, do political art & music, and help those in need in anyway you see fit in your community.”
“Share your efforts on Instagram and tag @MaryMorelloMemorialProject so as a community we can continue Mary’s work for peace, equality and justice.”
According to the announcement, donations collected through the initiative will benefit several organizations that Mary Morello supported throughout her life, including the UFW Foundation, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), The Midnight Mission, Jail Guitar Doors USA, Orphans of the Storm, All Chicago, Corazón con Cuba, Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF), and the Center for Native American Youth (CNAY).
A dedicated website has also been launched as the project’s central hub, where supporters can learn more about the initiative and contribute donations.
