Tom Morello Shuts Down Claims That Rage Against The Machine Supports Republican Ideals

Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello has once again addressed misconceptions surrounding the band’s political stance and recent narratives attached to the rap metal pioneers.

As social media fuels an increasingly polarized political climate, Rage Against The Machine has frequently found itself the target of criticism, particularly from right-wing detractors. One persistent claim has been that the band required proof of COVID-19 vaccination for their brief 2022 reunion tour—a notion that Morello has repeatedly debunked. While local venue regulations may have varied, vaccination was not a requirement imposed by the band.

Additionally, the October 2024 digital re-release of “Democratic National Convention 2000” sparked speculation that it was an endorsement of the Democratic Party. However, that 2000 protest show explicitly condemned both major U.S. political parties, a message seemingly lost on some over time.

On February 11th, Morello responded to a fan on X who credited RATM’s triple-platinum self-titled debut for shaping their political beliefs, stating:

“Tom. I would like to personally thank you for red pilling me with your 1st album. At the time it applied to Republicans. Now it applies to the dems. Let’s decentralize the power structure.”

Clarifying the band’s stance, Morello responded:

“You’re welcome. But as a reminder, the first RATM record came out during the Clinton administration. Then, as now, that music critiqued a capitalist/white supremacist power structure that was and is still in full effect. Currently more so than ever. Listen more closely. Like really listen and it’s quite clear.

(Preemptive dispelling of wearying misinformation likely to flood the comments: while being sharply critical of both no-good parties (Clinton/Obama/Biden’s war crimes & subservience to Wall Street and Bush/Trump war crimes, subservience to billionaires and Wall Street & general idiocy), no one from RATM has ever publicly supported a Dem or Repub candidate. EVER. Also, no RATM show has EVER required proof of vax or mask to attend, and anywhere you heard either of those things, or anyone who has echoed those things, is very probably lying to you about a whole lotta other stuff in the service of a racist/fascist agenda).”

Morello’s remarks serve as a reminder that Rage Against The Machine has never aligned with any political party, instead maintaining their long-standing critique of systemic power structures. The band’s activism continues to resonate today, with several members recently celebrating the clemency granted to Leonard Peltier, an Indigenous rights activist they’ve supported since their debut album.
