AT THE GATES Frontman Tomas Lindberg Passes Away at 52

Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg, frontman of Swedish melodic death metal pioneers At The Gates, has passed away at the age of 52 following a battle with cancer.

In August, Lindberg and the band revealed that he had been privately fighting adenoid cystic carcinoma since late 2023.

The band confirmed his passing this morning, September 16th, sharing the following statement:

“[Tomas Lindberg 1972 – 2025]

Tomas passed away this morning following complications related to his ongoing cancer treatment.

Despite intensive medical efforts, his life could not be saved.

Tomas – You were an inspiration to us all. A true friend, both compassionate & sympathetic. You will always be remembered for your generosity and your creative spirit.

You will be eternally missed.

Forever in our hearts.”

Lindberg’s influence on extreme music is immeasurable. As the voice of At The Gates, he helped pioneer the Gothenburg melodic death metal sound, with the band’s 1995 album Slaughter of the Soul cementing itself as a cornerstone release that inspired countless metalcore and death metal bands worldwide.

Beyond At The Gates, Lindberg’s work with bands such as Disfear, The Crown, and Lock Up showcased his versatility and further established him as one of extreme metal’s most important figures.
