Progressive metal heavyweights Tool could be setting their sights on both new music and an ambitious live presentation in the coming years. During a recent interview, drummer Danny Carey revealed that the band are currently working on fresh material, with hopes of issuing their next full-length sometime in 2027 — and potentially pairing its arrival with a residency-style run at Sphere in Las Vegas.
The update follows the band’s 2019 comeback album Fear Inoculum, which famously ended a 13-year gap between studio releases. While earlier expectations suggested a quicker turnaround, the timeline has continued to stretch — something longtime listeners have come to expect. Still, Carey sounded optimistic about the current pace of writing.
“[We’re] working on a lot of new Tool songs now, hopefully 2027, that’s the goal.”
Beyond the studio, Carey indicated the group have discussed staging performances inside the immersive Las Vegas venue — an idea he feels aligns naturally with Tool’s emphasis on visual presentation and production scale.
“Yeah, we’re very much into that. We’re hoping when we release the new record, maybe do a stint at the Sphere, ’cause I think we’re the perfect band for that. We’ve been talking to those guys.”
He acknowledged that pulling off such a residency would require extensive preparation and financial commitment.
“The preparation is pretty intense to get everything up… It’s a very expensive endeavor and it takes a while to get into the black, you know? I think it’s a few shows before you make any money, but it would be work cut out.”
Carey also shared his personal reaction after touring the venue, even though he hasn’t attended a full concert there yet.
“I just took a tour of it. I haven’t actually seen a full-on show, but we took [a tour] you know, just to show it off… It’s incredible man, I almost got veritgo.”
The drummer participated in the interview primarily while promoting a soundtrack collaboration tied to the newly released sci-fi comedy Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, directed by Gore Verbinski. Additional footage from the appearance also captured Carey joining a marching band during a Las Vegas premiere event tied to the film.
