Trivium have officially announced their 11th studio album, ‘Crown In The Grave’, which will arrive November 20 via Roadrunner Records. The announcement comes alongside the release of the album’s title track and its accompanying music video, directed by Pavel Trebukhin, who has also worked with Imminence and Amon Amarth.
The band previously introduced the album cycle with “Dead Inside Of Me,” which was also directed by Trebukhin.
Paolo Gregoletto said the band wanted to strike a balance between drawing from everything that has defined Trivium while still pushing the group into new territory.
“With this record, we wanted to find the space between those two things: Take everything we’ve learned and everything that makes Trivium what it is, but present it in ways we hadn’t before.”
The bassist and vocalist added that the album developed its own visual and thematic world, beginning with “Crown In The Grave,” which was inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s 1957 film ‘Throne Of Blood’. That concept eventually expanded into an interest in Japanese horror and cinema from the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s, influencing the album’s music, lyrics, artwork and overall atmosphere.
Gregoletto also pointed to several classic ’90s records as touchstones during the writing process, including Metallica’s ‘Metallica’, Megadeth’s ‘Countdown To Extinction’ and Soundgarden’s ‘Superunknown’.
“The choruses are so important, and the songs are relatable. That’s what we strived for.”
Frontman Matt Heafy said the album also reflects a period of personal change, including his experiences with mental health struggles and physical injuries.
“Facing yourself is the final quest. We had to do it as a band, and I had to do it in my personal life. I freed my mind from the constraints of being worried. I made a decision to just sing.”
The album also introduces a significant change behind the kit, with Alex Rüdinger now officially part of the band’s lineup. Heafy praised the drummer’s contributions beyond his playing, noting that his work as a songwriter made a substantial impact on the record.
Guitarist Corey Beaulieu said the group concentrated on the core elements that have always defined Trivium while putting greater emphasis on memorable riffs and hooks.
“We took all of the elements of Trivium, honed in on them, and focused on writing songs with big riffs and big hooks. We made the record we’d been dying to make.”
