Turnstile vocalist Brendan Yates stopped the band’s performance during their October 5 show at The Criterion in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, after allegedly witnessing a security guard strike a fan who had crossed the barricade.
Video of the incident has been circulating online after appearing on Reddit’s r/hardcore. In the footage, Yates can be seen stepping away from the performance to confront members of the venue’s security team and request that the guard involved be removed.
According to Yates, the security staff member had allegedly been punching a fan who had come over the barrier. Reports from attendees indicate the concertgoer had attempted to make their way onto the stage.
Yates ultimately made it clear that Turnstile would not continue performing with the guard still working the show. After speaking with security, he returned to the stage and addressed the crowd.
“To the security that’s doing a great job, a great job at what you’re doing — thank you. There are some that didn’t get the assignment.”
Yates acknowledged the intensity of Turnstile’s live shows and the fans making their way toward the stage, but said that did not justify security personnel using excessive force.
“And I know that all of you are coming up here and trying to have a good time, and it’s high energy, and there’s movement. And there’s no need for anyone to be swinging on anyone just coming over the barrier.”
He then delivered the ultimatum regarding the guard in question.
“That security guard cannot be here. [We] won’t play if he’s still here. And the rest, thank you for adjusting, and keeping this peaceful.”
Turnstile’s current run continues with several additional dates scheduled throughout October, including appearances with Vince Staples, Die Spitz, Pennywise, Trash Talk, Boy Harsher and Terror.
