ada have stepped outside their long-standing creative rules to pay tribute to one of the Pacific Northwest’s most influential bands. The Portland-based black metal outfit have released a cover of Nirvana’s “Something In The Way,” originally appearing on the grunge icons’ 1991 breakthrough album Nevermind.
The decision marks a rare exception for Uada, who have historically avoided recording covers in favor of developing a fully independent sonic identity. According to vocalist/guitarist Jake Superchi, the gravity of the song — and its regional significance — made it worth bending that rule.
“When UADA was formed, a rule was set: no covers, in pursuit of carving a wholly independent voice. With this song, we allowed ourselves to bend that rule,” Superchi explained.
“Recruiting a cellist for this project created a rare alignment—a moment to pay homage to one of the most formative and regional influences of my youth.”
While the band largely remains faithful to the original arrangement, their version transforms the track through a colder, more desolate lens, leaning into the emotional weight that has long defined the song.
“While staying close to the original arrangement, we allowed our interpretation to take on its own bleak, glacial weight—one that echoes through the song’s timeless sorrow.”
Adding to that atmosphere is a guest cello performance from C.E. Brown of Osi And The Jupiter and Heljarmadr, further deepening the somber tone of Uada’s interpretation.
