Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats are preparing to enter a new era with the announcement of their seventh studio album, “Shapes Of Midnight.” The British psychedelic rock outfit have revealed the details behind the upcoming record while also releasing its haunting title track.
The follow-up to the band’s previous work was partially inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s classic 1842 short story “The Masque Of The Red Death,” with the group crafting another dark and atmospheric journey through their signature blend of psychedelic rock, proto-metal and heavy rock influences.
Recording for “Shapes Of Midnight” took place entirely through analog sessions at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London, England. Band mastermind Kevin Starrs handled production duties, while engineer Chris Bolster (Ozzy Osbourne, Paul McCartney) oversaw the sessions. The album was later mastered by Noel Summerville (The White Stripes, My Bloody Valentine).
According to a press release, the new album finds Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats returning to some of the heavier guitar-driven elements of their earlier material while continuing to expand their sound.
“The album marks a return to the guitar-forward attack of their earlier records, but also an evolution. Their blessed invocation of proto-metal heaviness is gilded by blasts of uncanny melancholic pop, bruising NWOBHM gallop, jazzy textures and complexities, and Krautrock-y cro-magnon synth damage.”
The band’s frontman Kevin Starrs further described the strange and cinematic universe surrounding the group’s music:
“Our albums exist in an alternate universe to our own. They’re all stories that could happen here, but everything’s just a bit ‘off.’”
The newly released “Shapes Of Midnight” title track serves as the latest preview of the album, following April’s single “Don’t Let It Control You.”
