Venom have announced the death of longtime vocalist and bassist Conrad “Cronos” Lant, who was 63 years old.
The pioneering British metal band shared the news on October 1, paying tribute to the musician who remained at the center of Venom for more than four decades. Lant’s work with the group helped shape the band’s influential early catalog, beginning with ‘Welcome To Hell’ and continuing through ‘Black Metal’, ‘At War With Satan’, ‘Possessed’ and beyond.
In their statement, Venom reflected on Lant’s impact on the band and heavy music as a whole.
“For more than four decades, Conrad’s voice, bass and vision were at the heart of VENOM.”
The band also acknowledged the longtime fans who supported Venom throughout Lant’s career, referring to them collectively as the band’s “Legions.”
“Conrad was there at the centre of it all — uncompromising, fearless and unmistakable.”
A message from Lant’s son Nathan was also included in the band’s statement, with Nathan thanking Venom’s fans for their longstanding support of his father.
“I want to thank all of the Legions for all of the support you have given my dad over the years. I know he really appreciated you all. He has laid down his soul, and his music will live on. The legend of Cronos will never die.”
Lant spearheaded Venom through much of the band’s career while also pursuing solo material outside of the group, releasing several albums during the 1990s and early 2000s.
No cause of death has been disclosed.
The Mosh Netork extends its condolences to Lant’s family, friends, bandmates and fans.
