A crowdfunding campaign has launched for an unauthorized documentary focused on the final seven years in the lives of the late Wayne Static and his wife Tera Wray—despite direct opposition from both families and estates. Directed by Matt Zane, known for fronting Society 1 and for his work in the adult film world, the project was first announced this fall.
Zane stated that initial filming began before the couple’s deaths, though the project never materialized after Wayne passed away on November 1st, 2014 from a deadly combination of prescription medication and alcohol. Wray died by suicide in January 2016.
On December 10th, the families of Wayne and Tera issued a statement condemning the documentary and warning that “any attempt to exploit their unauthorized likeness will be met with the appropriate legal response.”
Zane has also claimed to possess “an EP’s worth of material” recorded with Wayne for an abandoned film project starring Wray. He publicly suggested that he planned to revisit and finish that music with the assistance of AI technology—an idea the families strongly objected to as well.
Alongside the December 11th launch of his Indiegogo campaign, Zane released a statement explaining his intentions for the documentary:
“Wayne Static and Tera Wray asked me to create this about their life.
I am an award winning director with hundreds of music videos to my name as well as two documentaries… My hope is that this project will present Wayne and Tera’s relationship in a way that they wanted the world to see them.
The funds will be used to provide filming and editing costs… There are some great perks and you will be directly responsible for helping Wayne and Tera’s vision become a reality.”
Zane also published a companion video further outlining the project, including a snippet of an unreleased Wayne Static track titled “I Watch”. In the video, he says:
“My name is Matt Zane and it is my goal with your help to complete a documentary that Wayne Static and Tera Wray asked me to film…
I also have never before seen footage that will be included… Another exciting aspect of this project is that I worked on music with Wayne that is unreleased that will be featured within the film in some form.”
The documentary’s fundraising campaign is currently active.
