Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland has opened up about the ongoing grief within the band following the death of bassist Sam Rivers, who passed away last October.
The nü-metal group recently paid tribute to both Rivers and truck driver Dougie Miller during their headlining set at this year’s Download Festival, acknowledging a difficult period of loss surrounding their touring cycle.
In a new interview with Heavy Consequence, Borland became emotional while discussing his late bandmate.
“He was like family. I’m gonna try not to cry. It’s just like we lost a piece of our DNA. It’s too hard to talk about right now in depth.”
He continued by reflecting on the band’s current lineup and the difficulty of moving forward without Rivers.
“He can’t ever be replaced. I mean, we’re so lucky for Richie [Buxton], who’s playing with us right now. He’s such a great player, and he’s just a wonderful guy, and we’re gonna hold onto him for as long as we can, ’cause he also plays in a band with his wife, Ecca Vandal, and they’re doing really great right now, and their career’s kind of blowing up. But we’re just gonna keep Richie for as long as we can and keep moving forward.”
Borland added that the emotional weight of the loss is still ongoing for the band.
“Sam is not a replaceable person. He was the heartbeat. It’s crazy talking about… very emotional talking about it. I think that last year when it happened, we were all kind of in shock, and now we’re all grieving.”
Sam Rivers, a founding member of Limp Bizkit, was widely regarded by his bandmates as “the pulse beneath every song.” Following his passing, the band released a tribute video, which was first shown at their first show back after the tragedy.
The band has since continued touring with bassist Richie “Kid Not” Buxton stepping in for live performances.
