Australian alt-metal outfit Windwaker have unveiled the new music video for their latest single, “dna.”
The track arrives as the band counts down to the release of their third studio album, ‘smile, you’re on camera.’ The record is scheduled to arrive October 23rd through Fearless, with “dna” offering another glimpse at the material ahead of its release.
Windwaker describe the new track as an examination of identity, self-worth and the internal battle that comes with trying to break destructive habits.
“‘dna’ explores a deeply internal struggle with identity, self-worth, and the feeling of being trapped by one’s own nature. The song reflects on emotional instability and the pressure of living up to expectations, while battling impulses, ego, and the fear of never truly changing.”
The band explained that the song’s title reflects the idea of feeling as though certain negative traits are permanently embedded within someone, creating a conflict between the desire to grow and the inability to escape familiar patterns.
“There’s a recurring tension between wanting growth and feeling stuck in destructive patterns, as if these flaws are hardwired into their ‘DNA.’”
Windwaker also pointed to authenticity as another recurring theme throughout the forthcoming album. The lyrics address superficial validation and changing identities, with references to chasing likes and people switching sides.
“Another key theme here which is explored over the album is authenticity. References to ‘doing it for the likes’ and people ‘switching sides’ highlights disillusionment with superficial validation and fake personas, while the protagonist in this song tries to strip away ego and confront their true self.”
‘smile, you’re on camera.’ will arrive October 23rd via Fearless.
