Australian alternative metal outfit Windwaker have unveiled a new music video for their latest single, “do or die,” offering a pointed commentary on political division, online discourse and the so-called culture war.
The track arrives ahead of the band’s third studio album, ‘smile, you’re on camera’, which is scheduled for an October 23rd release. Headstrong Films Production were behind the newly premiered video.
According to Windwaker, “do or die” was written as a response to the increasing divisions they see both within society and across the internet, while encouraging people to find common ground rather than allowing those divisions to further separate them.
“Everywhere we look there is conflict, we are surrounded by it and have never been so divided as a humanity. Wars between countries, toxic online discourse over ideology, countries divided over political policy from within, what we think is right and wrong has become a tribe identity and we are at war with one another.”
The band continued by arguing that the language surrounding a “culture war” can distract from deeper economic divisions, with the song ultimately calling for greater unity among people who may otherwise find themselves on opposing sides.
“Leaders will call it a ‘culture war’ when in reality it’s a way of keeping us distracted from class war that has been happening for decades. ‘do or die’ points out the division we’re currently facing and urges the people to embrace the tribe mentality but to unify over the common enemy of leaders who don’t serve our best interests.”
