Xzibit Expresses Love for DEFTONES, Teases Metal EP with B-Real

While Xzibit remains a staple of the rap world — known for platinum hits and his unforgettable role as the host of MTV’s ‘Pimp My Ride’ — the West Coast legend has long had his foot in the world of heavy music. From touring with Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, and Linkin Park, to appearing on the 2000 Loud Rocks compilation with Sevendust and Endo, and even sharing the stage with Deftones for a live rendition of “Back To School (Mini Maggit)”, Xzibit’s connection to the nü-metal scene runs deep.

In a newly released episode of ‘What’s In My Bag?’ from Amoeba Music, Xzibit stopped by the Hollywood, CA location to do some crate digging. Among his picks: a Metallica shirt and a vinyl copy of *Deftones’ 2000 platinum-certified album White Pony, which recently marked its 25th anniversary.

Reflecting on that record, Xzibit shared:

“I spent a lot of time doing ‘Vans Warped Tour‘, ‘Anger Management’, stuff with Linkin Park, stuff with the The X-Ecutioners, Limp Bizkit; I did a lot of cross collaborations with rock bands, and I’ve also toured with a lot of rock bands. This [‘White Pony’] was one of my favorite albums from the Deftones. ‘Back To School’ was like my favorite song on here. And I think you can find it online, I was like out in a festival in Europe somewhere, and they were playing and they let me come up and sing the song with them on stage. If you find that, it’s gold (laughs).”

But Xzibit’s relationship with heavy music may not be limited to nostalgia. According to B-Real of Cypress Hill, who recently appeared on a podcast with Fieldy of Korn, Xzibit may have something heavy in the works. B-Real hinted that the upcoming Serial Killers album — the long-running rap collective featuring B-Real, Xzibit, and Demrick — will feature a metal-leaning track, and could be the start of something even more intense.

B-Real revealed:

“On the Serial Killers sht, we have a song that’s more hard-edged, you know, like with that metal sht on it. Scoop [Deville, producer] decided, out of nowhere, ‘I’m gonna do one metal song and produce one metal-style song.’ And we did it, and Xzibit led that, you know, on the chorus, and then he laid some dope verses down. And he sounded fcking amazing on that sht. You know, I was like, I told him, ‘bro, you should do like, an EP of just like, on some metal sh*t.’ Xzibit on some metal shit. And, yeah, because he sounded, he’s got that voice.”

He added:

“…I told him, I was trying to plant the seed, ‘You should do a fcking EP of Xzibit on the metal.’ We’ll see if he does it. He should, because he’s to me, to me, he’s cut for it, know what I mean? And he’s still as sharp as fcking ever, if not sharper.”

With a new Serial Killers release on the way this fall and that potential metal EP in the conversation, 2025 could be the year we finally hear Xzibit fully cross over into the heavy realm.
