Your Spirit Dies has recruited Zao vocalist Dan Weyandt for their newly released single, “Serpentine.” This track is featured on the band’s upcoming debut album, My Gnawing Pains Will Never Rest, which is set to drop on May 2nd via MNRK Heavy. In addition to Weyandt, the album will also feature guest appearances from Carson Pace of The Callous Daoboys and Blaythe Steuer of No Cure.
Vocalist Brandon Byars discussed the track’s creation and its themes, stating:
“Serpentine ended up being one of the last songs we put together for the record. We were running two writing stations simultaneously — Tyler Dorman was crafting these fast, aggressive d-beat riffs while Holden Hall brought in some pre-written ideas. From there, we all dug in with Greg Thomas, our producer, to refine the track. I think it really captures the essence of the album, showcasing the sounds that define it.”
On the song’s lyrical content, Byars added:
“Lyrically, it’s something everyone can relate to. Almost everyone has dealt with someone who has narcissistic tendencies, and sometimes you have to walk away — whether it’s from a relationship, friendship, or otherwise. The lyrics illustrate the catharsis you get from finally ‘cutting the cord’ with people like that.”
Reflecting on Weyandt’s guest appearance, Byars shared:
“It’s been amazing getting to know Dan over the past few years. Our name literally came from a Zao song, so we thought our full-circle moment would be touring with them. But to have his voice and face featured in a piece of our art is even bigger than that. He did an incredible job, and I think it really elevates the song. We’re deeply grateful to him.”
Robbie Grantham and Jesse Ray worked on the video below for the song.
