The split between Ahren Stringer and Australian metalcore outfit The Amity Affliction appears to be heading toward legal proceedings. Stringer, who handled vocals and bass for the band, initially stepped away from touring in May 2024, with the group citing his need to focus on mental health and addiction recovery.
By September of that year, Stringer publicly celebrated his sobriety and expressed his desire to return to the band. However, earlier this month, The Amity Affliction announced that Stringer was no longer a member of the group.
Prior to this official statement, Stringer had alluded on social media that his departure was not by choice. Following the announcement, he shared posts criticizing Joel Birch and the way his hiatus and eventual removal were handled. He later directly confirmed that he had been “kicked out” of the band.
This week, Stringer posted a screenshot online that suggests he is legally opposing Birch‘s claim to the band’s trademark. He followed up in an Instagram story with the statement: “Who started the band again? You will lose.”
Ahren Stringer, Joseph Lilwall, and Troy Brady have been credited with founding The Amity Affliction in 2003, while Joel Birch joined the band in 2004.
Since Stringer’s departure, the band has been performing live with Jonathan Reeves filling in on bass and vocals.
