It appears the Great Banana Treaty may already be in jeopardy.
End It vocalist Akil Godsey has seemingly added a new piece of ink that looks suspiciously like an anti-banana statement, potentially putting a rather unexpected twist on the bizarre saga that began at one of the band’s shows earlier this summer.
The whole affair dates back to June, when End It performed in Toronto, ON and Godsey and his bandmates took issue with a concertgoer wearing a banana costume. The band encouraged members of the audience to tear the costume apart, with Godsey offering up the setlist to whoever took on the task.
As the situation unfolded, Godsey warned the banana-clad attendee from the stage, stating, “he wanted the attention, and now he has it.”
The concertgoer later explained that he wasn’t actually there to see End It, but had attended the show to catch headliners Terror. He also claimed that he had been wearing a banana costume to concerts for years and that the band never apologized for what happened.
The incident subsequently generated plenty of backlash, with critics accusing End It and Godsey of going too far by turning the crowd against someone over their choice of attire. The controversy also reportedly resulted in some touring opportunities being pulled.
Despite that, Godsey and the banana community eventually appeared to make peace.
During a late-June European festival appearance at Jera On Air, End It brought a banana-costumed fan onstage, with Godsey embracing the attendee and jokingly declaring the moment “The Great Banana Treaty of Ysselsteyn.”
It wasn’t the same person involved in the original Toronto incident, but it seemed to signal that hostilities had officially ended.
Now, however, Godsey has apparently thrown another banana-shaped wrench into the proceedings.
A newly revealed tattoo shared via his Instagram story appears to feature imagery that could reasonably be interpreted as an anti-banana symbol — essentially the Ghostbusters logo for the banana people of the world.
Whether this represents the dissolution of the Great Banana Treaty or simply Godsey continuing to have some fun with the saga remains unclear. Either way, the banana drama apparently isn’t quite finished yet.
