A chaotic moment unfolded during End It’s performance in Toronto, ON on June 5 when the Baltimore hardcore band singled out a fan dressed in a banana costume and encouraged the crowd to tear the outfit apart.
The incident took place during a bill featuring Terror, Pain Of Truth, and Start Today. Mid-set, End It vocalist Akil Godsey addressed the fan directly, questioning the decision to attend the show in the costume and eventually offering the band’s setlist as a reward to anyone who managed to destroy it.
“We’re just gonna address it, do you want to do this now, or later?… Banana man, what the f*ck is you doing my n****?”
When parts of the audience cheered for the fan, Godsey quickly shut that reaction down.
“No, no, no, no, no, you don’t get rewarded for doing that sh*t. He wanted the attention, and now he has it.”
The situation escalated when another member of the band joked about the crowd’s next course of action.
“And now, everyone here has to kill you.”
Godsey then doubled down on the challenge.
“And now, if you strip the banana, you get this lovely setlist. I’m just saying, he was asking for attention, now you got it.”
Fans near the front of the stage soon began grabbing at the costume, tearing it apart as the pit erupted around the fan. Video footage from the show appears to show pieces of the outfit being ripped away and tossed through the crowd, including the banana headpiece.
The fan, who has become known in some concert circles for attending shows while dressed in banana attire, later addressed the incident on social media. Posting a photo of the destroyed outfit, he wrote:
“Rip suit 3.”
The fan also shared a longer statement criticizing how the situation unfolded.
“People have been trying to dim my sparkle my entire life. It sucks, but I’m used to it. I’ve surfered hundreds of people in this suit, all genders, all ages, safely. Especially, a lot of first timers that felt safe to approach me for their first surf.
@enditbaltmore two of your band members crossed the line…and I’m obligated to speak on it.
F*ck the police? While policing what people wear? Take off, hoser.
The message last night; Conform or get called out, exactly the opposite of what Hardcore is supposed to be.
I was an unwilling participant, attacked and clothing removed at the direction of a band I paid to see… What would you do?
At the time of writing, End It has not publicly commented further on the incident beyond what was said from the stage during the performance.
