All That Remains returns with their tenth studio album, Antifragile, their first since 2018. This release marks a significant chapter for the band, as it is their first album with guitarist Jason Richardson, following the tragic passing of founding guitarist Oli Herbert, and also their first independent release without label support. Over the years, Oli Herbert and the band established a signature metalcore sound, while Jason Richardson carved out a name for himself with his progressive and shred-heavy style. As the band experimented with a more rock-centric direction in later albums, questions about their sonic identity arose.
On Antifragile, Richardson proves he didn’t aim to drastically change the band’s sound. Instead, he seamlessly blends his technical prowess with the melodic, heavy framework that Oli Herbert helped define. The album opens with “Divine”, the first single, which instantly reassures fans with its fast-paced aggression and Phil Labonte‘s signature melodic choruses. Momentum carries into “Kerosene”, before the band shifts gears with the emotionally charged “No Tomorrow”, a ballad that showcases their softer side.
The title track, “Antifragile”, reignites the heaviness, fusing Richardson’s intricate style with the classic All That Remains sound. But the standout for sheer brutality is “Cut Their Tongues Out”, a track defined by tempo shifts, crushing downtuned breakdowns, and the absence of clean vocals.
Antifragile flows effortlessly, striking a balance between intensity and melody. It’s a blend of The Fall of Ideals and Overcome that reminds fans why they fell in love with the band. Jason Richardson has injected fresh energy into All That Remains, honoring the legacy of Oli Herbert while helping craft what may be one of the band’s best albums to date.
