Amon Amarth have stepped into uncharted territory with the release of “Upphaf,” the band’s first-ever acoustic track.
Known worldwide for their thunderous blend of melodic death metal and Norse mythology-inspired storytelling, the Swedish metal veterans have stripped away the crushing riffs and battle-ready intensity for a more atmospheric and reflective approach on the new single.
Produced by Jacob Hansen (Katatonia, Aborted), “Upphaf” offers a glimpse into a different side of Amon Amarth as the band continues laying the groundwork for its upcoming 13th studio album.
According to a press release accompanying the release:
“Iconic Swedish heavy metallers Amon Amarth approach a new way of songwriting on their first-ever acoustic excursion ‘Upphaf’. The song strips away the fury of modern melodic heavy metal to reveal the ancient, skeletal frame of a Norse epic.”
“Reimagined for the gathering space of a longhouse hearth, the song features hypnotic melodies and mesmerising choirs.”
“The stripped-back composition carries the solemnity of an oral history whispered under the shadow of the Allfather, proving the band’s interest in Oden cuts just as deep by firelight as it does on epic global stages.”
“The single serves as the quiet moment to what lies ahead, before the fury of their next studio album.”
While Amon Amarth have incorporated melodic and atmospheric elements throughout their career, “Upphaf” marks the first time the band has fully embraced an acoustic presentation, trading metal’s usual aggression for a solemn and cinematic interpretation of their signature Viking-inspired themes.
The track arrives with an accompanying music video directed by Pavel Trebukhin, whose previous work includes videos for Imminence and thrown.
As anticipation continues to build for the band’s next album, “Upphaf” serves as a surprising and ambitious detour that showcases a different dimension of Amon Amarth’s songwriting.
