Coal Chamber drummer Mikey “Bug” Cox has undergone what his medical team hopes will be the final surgery related to his battle with stage 3 cancer.
Cox, who publicly revealed his diagnosis in April 2025, has spent the past year undergoing extensive treatment that has included chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and multiple surgeries. Earlier this year, he shared the positive news that he had been given the all-clear, with his latest procedure serving as a corrective operation intended to, in his words, “put the rest of my insides back together.”
Ahead of the surgery, Cox shared an emotional message with fans, reflecting on the difficult road he has traveled and expressing gratitude for the support he has received throughout his recovery.
“BIG DAY!!! My lovely baby mamma and I are at the hospital for what my medical team hopes will be my final cancer surgery.”
“This has been a long, difficult journey filled with appointments, tests, surgeries, and more uncertainty than I ever imagined. Through it all, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have the love and support of my family, friends, my doctors, and all of you.”
“I’m beyond grateful for how far we’ve come. I’m alive, I’m getting stronger every day, and today feels like another huge step toward putting this chapter behind me.”
Cox also reiterated his desire to return to performing with Coal Chamber once his recovery is complete.
“I can’t wait to finish recovering, get healthy, and get back where I belong—on stage with Coal Chamber. Seeing all of you again is a huge part of what’s kept me motivated through this fight.”
“FxCK CANCER!!!”
The surgery ultimately proved successful, though Cox revealed in a post-operative update that he is facing a challenging recovery process.
“First steps post surgery! I’m in a ridiculous amount of pain and I have a massive hole in my stomach that will act as a drain and heal itself.”
“They also had to cut my ab muscle and sewed it back together so that is pain every time I breathe but surgery was a massive success and hopefully the last one.”
“I’ll be ready to go full steam in a few months!”
While the procedure forced Coal Chamber to withdraw from their planned appearance at this year’s Louder Than Life Festival, the successful outcome is an encouraging sign as Cox continues working toward a full recovery.
For now, the drummer’s focus remains on rehabilitation, physical therapy, and regaining his strength before eventually returning to the stage.
“Fxck Cancer.”
