The days of rigid genre boundaries are largely gone. That reality is becoming increasingly apparent with new details surrounding A$AP Rocky’s long-awaited fourth studio album, Don’t Be Dumb.
After years of delays, leaks, and speculation, the album is now officially scheduled for release on January 16, 2026. While the date itself has been anticipated for some time, it’s the project’s creative direction that has begun to draw attention well outside of hip-hop circles.
According to newly surfaced details tied to Rocky’s partnership with NYC rewards platform Bilt, Don’t Be Dumb pulls from a wide range of influences, including hip-hop, jazz, indie, and — the whole reason The Mosh Network would even be mentioning this — metal. Rather than a surface-level experiment, metal-leaning textures are said to be a foundational element of the album’s sound.
Cinematic And Heavy By Design
Rocky’s approach appears to be rooted more in atmosphere and mood than traditional genre fusion. The album features instrumental contributions from composer Danny Elfman, whose work spans iconic film scores such as Batman, Beetlejuice, and Edward Scissorhands. In addition, the project’s visual presentation is being overseen by filmmaker and artist Tim Burton.
“Danny Elfman just did my album with me… He scored a bunch of the songs. We had [the TV] on mute and were just making music to all of the old films.”
That combination points toward a record steeped in cinematic tension and darker tonal palettes — territory metal has long occupied. Rocky has described sessions that involved scoring music to muted films, a process not unlike how many metal and experimental records are constructed around dynamics, pacing, and emotional weight rather than conventional song structures.
Heavy Crossovers Becoming Less Rare
Rocky’s embrace of heavier aesthetics comes at a time when high-profile crossover moments between metal and mainstream artists are becoming increasingly visible. In recent years, Megan Thee Stallion collaborated with Spiritbox on “TYG” (and the “Cobra” remix) and later brought vocalist Courtney LaPlante out for a live performance at Coachella 2025. Elsewhere, Lil Wayne recently appeared on the metal-leaning track “Tyrant” alongside Lucifena, marking another high-profile step into heavier territory.
While metal-adjacent experiments from mainstream artists are nothing new, Don’t Be Dumb appears positioned as a more deliberate and fully realized exploration rather than a one-off collaboration or stylistic detour.
