Metalcore outfit Boundaries have issued a new alternate mix of their latest single “Skies Cast Amber Black” after widespread fan discussion surrounding the song’s original sonic presentation. The updated version has now begun rolling out across streaming platforms, effectively replacing the previously released mix.
The original version of the track — mixed by Drew Fulk (Knocked Loose, Disturbed) — was embraced internally by the band but quickly sparked divided reactions among listeners when it debuted earlier this month. Fans voiced mixed opinions regarding the production, prompting vocalist Matt McDougal to directly address the situation online.
In an initial response, McDougal acknowledged the unexpected reaction while standing by the band’s creative decision:
“…We had no clue the mix would be so divisive haha, we spent months on it and really love how it came out and we’re thankful for your honesty regarding how it hits peoples ears for the first time… maybe it will with everyone else as well? Who friggin knows.”
As feedback continued to pour in, the band revealed they had originally narrowed the song down to two mixes during production. Wanting to respect the strong connection they share with listeners, Boundaries decided to publicly test the alternate version with fans before making a final call.
McDougal explained the reasoning behind sharing the second mix:
“The connection we have with people who listen to us has always been at the forefront of our intentions behind what we make… ultimately this doesn’t work without either of us, it’s 50% us 50% you in a weird type of way.”
He clarified that both versions were equally loved by the band and that the decision wasn’t about replacing collaborators or reworking the song entirely, but rather choosing between two finalized mixes already completed during the recording process.
Following overwhelmingly thoughtful and respectful feedback from fans, the band ultimately chose to move forward with the alternate version. McDougal later confirmed plans to update streaming services so listeners could hear the preferred mix moving forward.
“Truly and absolutely from my heart thank you guys for everything… I think the next move is take this mix going forward.”
Earlier today (March 27th), the revised mix officially appeared on Spotify, overwriting the original upload. Interestingly, Drew Fulk still retains mixing credit on the updated version, suggesting the alternate mix stems from the same production sessions. Other digital platforms are expected to reflect the change shortly if they have not already done so.
The track — along with future material tied to the same release — has also been dedicated by the band to their late friend Dave Shapiro.
