Former Turnstile guitarist Brady Ebert has been ruled incompetent to stand trial in connection with an attempted first-degree murder charge stemming from an alleged 2025 incident involving William Yates, the 79-year-old father of Turnstile vocalist Brendan Yates.
According to previously reported details from the case, Ebert is accused of striking William Yates with a vehicle outside the Yates family residence following a verbal confrontation. The incident reportedly left Yates with a severely broken leg.
A police report previously filed in the case alleged that the confrontation followed an exchange initiated by Ebert, while home security footage was said to have captured portions of the incident. Authorities also reportedly described the incident as the latest in a series of confrontations involving Ebert and members of the Yates family.
Ebert, who was removed from Turnstile in 2022, has denied the allegations against him. He has reportedly characterized the police account as a “lie” and maintained that he acted in self-defense.
Earlier this month, Ebert was ordered to undergo a competency evaluation as the court considered whether he was able to proceed with a trial. According to The Banner, Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Karla Smith has now determined that Ebert is incompetent to stand trial and classified him as a danger to himself.
Following the ruling, Ebert was remanded to the Maryland Department of Health, where he will receive treatment before his competency is reevaluated. A hearing regarding that evaluation is scheduled for January 19.
Ebert reportedly became disruptive during the latest court proceeding, including shouting in court and stating that he had fired his attorney, Mark Sobel, despite Sobel being present.
Ebert also reportedly described the proceedings as an “extreme miscarriage of justice” and continued to challenge the police department’s handling of the case.
Sobel subsequently addressed the court regarding his client’s condition:
“Hopefully, he’ll get the proper treatment for his competency to be restored, so we can proceed to trial in this case.”
The competency ruling does not resolve the underlying criminal allegations. Ebert’s ability to stand trial will be reconsidered following his treatment and subsequent evaluation.
