Self-described “bimboviolence” outfit BRAT have announced their sophomore album, Manslayer, set for release on September 25 through Prosthetic Records.
The album was recorded at Bricktop Recording in Chicago, Illinois, with Andy Nelson (Weekend Nachos) handling production, engineering, and mastering duties.
To coincide with the announcement, the band has released the album’s lead single, “Manslayer (Hell Hath No Fury),” alongside a new music video directed by John Colgan.
According to the band, the lyrical themes on Manslayer were heavily influenced by country songs centered on revenge narratives, including The Chicks’ “Goodbye Earl,” Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats,” and Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder & Lead.”
Vocalist Liz Selfish, who took over lyric-writing duties for the album, explained:
“There’s not a lot of those tropes in death metal, which I think primarily is because there’s not a lot of women in that space. I thought that was a really cool perspective and I really liked the storytelling aspect of it.”
While guitarist Brenner Moate previously handled the band’s lyrics, Selfish ended up writing the entire album after contributing the first song.
“I wrote the first song for the album, and I just loved writing. I was like, ‘I really love doing this, and I want to do more,’ so I ended up writing the whole album.”
She also noted that Manslayer pushes BRAT’s signature style into darker territory while retaining the band’s trademark sense of fun.
“We’re evolving the bimboviolence and the campiness by making it all a little bit darker with this album, and a bit more overtly violent.”
The album will feature guest appearances from Revocation frontman David Davidson on “Femicidal Vengeance” and Walls Of Jericho vocalist Candace Buckingham on “Blistered Tongues.”
