Bring Me The Horizon have shared the first taste of their upcoming re-recorded version of their debut album, unveiling a newly revamped take on “Black & Blue.”
The track will appear on ‘Count Your Blessings – Repented’, a complete re-recording of the band’s 2006 debut album that is scheduled for release on July 10. While Bring Me The Horizon are now known for their arena-filling alternative metal sound, the Sheffield outfit first emerged as one of the most talked-about deathcore bands of the mid-2000s.
The project arrives as the original Count Your Blessings approaches its 20th anniversary. According to frontman Oli Sykes, the decision to revisit the album wasn’t born out of nostalgia alone, but from years of dissatisfaction with the record’s original production.
Speaking with Nik Nocturnal last month, Sykes addressed the long-standing perception that the band had distanced themselves from their deathcore roots.
“I think a lot of people think that we hate that record or are embarrassed about it, ’cause we don’t play it and stuff, but really we were just always disappointed with how it sounded. Like, I remember we weren’t stoked on it at all when we came out of the studio.”
Sykes went on to explain that the production of the original release never aligned with what the band had envisioned at the time. He pointed to producer Dan Sprigg’s relative lack of experience with extreme metal as a contributing factor, noting that Sprigg’s résumé prior to the album included work with British pop and soul outfit Simply Red.
For the new version, Bring Me The Horizon enlisted Buster Odeholm (thrown, Vildhjarta, Humanity’s Last Breath) to handle mixing duties, aiming to finally capture the sound they originally imagined nearly two decades ago.
The release of “Black & Blue” offers fans their first opportunity to judge the overhaul for themselves, with debate already beginning over whether the updated version improves upon the deathcore classic.
To celebrate the release, Bring Me The Horizon have also scheduled a handful of special Count Your Blessings anniversary performances:
