Several of rock and metal’s most recognizable music publications have reportedly been hit by sweeping layoffs.
According to Pitchfork, nearly the entire staffs of BrooklynVegan, Revolver, Alternative Press, and Goldmine were laid off on August 4, marking another major blow to the music media landscape.
The report states that emails sent to BrooklynVegan staff members began bouncing back following the layoffs, with founder Dave Levine reportedly remaining as one of the few exceptions.
The affected outlets span decades of music journalism. BrooklynVegan was founded in 2004, Alternative Press launched in 1985, Revolver has been a staple of the hard rock and metal scene since the early 2000s, while Goldmine has covered record collecting since the mid-1970s.
The publications currently operate under Veeps, the ticketed livestream platform founded by Good Charlotte members Benji Madden and Joel Madden. Following Live Nation’s acquisition of Veeps, the publications became part of the company’s expanding media portfolio after previously operating under MDDN and Project M.
The reported cuts come just months after another significant round of layoffs reshaped the heavy music media landscape. In April, layoffs tied to Sony affected Metal Injection, MetalSucks, and The Blast Beat Network, underscoring the continued challenges facing digital music journalism.
At the time of publication, Veeps has not publicly commented on the reported layoffs.
