Colepitz have officially returned with ‘The Time Between’, their first new studio album in 16 years. The record arrived digitally on October 23, while vinyl editions are scheduled to follow on November 10 through High River Records.
Alongside the album’s digital release, the band have shared a music video for “Knock,” the fourth single to emerge from the comeback effort.
Vocalist Rob Korhonen reflected on the lengthy process behind the album, describing it as the result of years of dedication and collaboration.
“It’s been a long road to get here. Over a decade of hard work, blood, sweat and tears went into the making of this record. All we’ve ever dreamed about was making a truly great record, and this is us taking our best blue-collar shot. It was a full team effort.”
Korhonen went on to credit the many people who helped bring the album together, including producer Jonathan Wyman, Dave Gutter, Darren Elder of Halo Recording Studio, Sky Van Hoff, Jens Dreesen, Munsey Ricci, Jon Freeman, and artists Alyssa Kubitz and Dave Minalli.
He also described the philosophy behind the band’s name and approach to performing:
“The ethos behind the Colepitz name is to play every note as though it could be your last, and we definitely hit that on this group of songs.”
Guitarist Ray Suhy, also known for his work with Six Feet Under, explained how the band’s reunion gradually took shape after their previous release, ‘No Tomorrow Tonight’, arrived in 2010.
“We released ‘No Tomorrow Tonight’ in 2010, played a few shows, and then Rob moved away to Vermont. We stayed in touch and always talked about doing more music, but nothing took shape. A couple of years back Rob started writing songs with Dave Gutter, and I was really into what they were coming up with. We kept going, but it still didn’t feel like Colepitz yet.”
Suhy said that reworking the song “Reaper” ultimately helped the musicians recognize the sound they wanted to recapture.
“It wasn’t until I reshaped their version of ‘Reaper’ that Rob and I looked at each other and were like… fuck, this is Colepitz. I think in a way we weren’t trying to go back to that place, because for us it’s a very special and heavy place emotionally. It requires full dedication and carries a lot of the weight of the past with it. At that point, though, we dove in full steam.”
Drummer Shane Kinney also praised the finished album, describing the experience of recording it as a privilege while emphasizing how much he continues to enjoy listening to it.
“At this point, I really look at it more as a fan. When I listen to it, it just sounds so fresh to me, and so emotive, and so groovy in the heaviest possible way. Making this album was really a joy and a privilege I have not taken for granted, but listening to it is even better. The more I hear it, the more I love it, and I hope you do too.”
