Oceans Ate Alaska have announced their new album, ‘Purge’, which is scheduled to arrive on January 22. The upcoming record marks the British metalcore band’s first full-length release featuring vocalist Joel Heywood, as well as their first album to be released entirely independently.
Alongside the announcement, the band have unveiled a music video for their latest single, “Bring You Back.” The clip was directed by Shaun Hodson, whose previous work includes videos for Sleep Token and Cradle Of Filth.
Heywood drew from his wife’s experiences with prenatal and postnatal depression when writing the emotionally heavy track, describing the helplessness he felt while trying to support her through the illness.
“She was at the lowest point I’d ever seen her in my life and all I wanted to do was save her. No matter how much love and care or attention to her issues I gave, it’s chemical, and nothing I could do would help her to come back to who she was. For her it just felt endless.”
He also explained how those experiences informed the music video’s concept.
“It’s an over the top version of events of her becoming a ‘ghost of herself,’ a ghost of the person she once was and I felt powerless no matter how much I tried.”
The broader themes of ‘Purge’ extend across trauma and mental health struggles, with Heywood describing the album as a way to confront feelings he had carried for years.
“‘Purge’ came from wanting to finally get this all out of me, to let it bleed from me onto the songs and into the pages of the lyrics, and to try to start to feel free of things I’ve held inside for so long.”
The 11-track album is available to pre-order through the band’s online store at oaa.goodtunes.music.
