Spiritbox vocalist Courtney LaPlante made a surprise appearance during Megan Thee Stallion’s Coachella set on Sunday, April 13—joining the rap icon on stage for the live debut of their 2023 collaborative track “TYG.”
The cameo was especially notable given the Canadian metal outfit’s ongoing tour schedule. The band performed in Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday night (April 12) and is set to play Philadelphia, PA on Monday (April 14)—meaning LaPlante and her husband, Spiritbox guitarist Mike Stringer, flew cross-country in the midst of their tour to take part in the high-profile performance. While Stringer wasn’t involved in the performance, he was also at Coachella, supporting LaPlante as she shared the stage with Megan Thee Stallion.
The set was one of the final showcases of the weekend, with Megan Thee Stallion delivering a star-studded performance on Coachella’s main stage. Alongside LaPlante, she was joined by Queen Latifah for a powerful rendition of “U.N.I.T.Y.”, Victoria Monét for “On My Mama”, and Ciara for a mashup of “Roc Steady” and “Goodies.”
“TYG”, which appears on the deluxe edition of Megan—Megan Thee Stallion’s third full-length album—was originally released last year and marked a bold genre-blending moment between the two artists. Prior to that, Spiritbox dropped a remix of Megan’s “Cobra”, which was officially endorsed by the rapper herself.
Formed in 2017 by LaPlante and guitarist Mike Stringer, Spiritbox recently released their long-awaited sophomore album Tsunami Sea to widespread acclaim. Metal Hammer’s Rich Hobson gave the album four-and-a-half stars, writing, “Tsunami Sea feels like the moment Spiritbox firmly step into their own as a band who could contend with the likes of Bring Me The Horizon and Sleep Token, as the next zeitgeist-setting act.”
The band continues their North American tour through spring, with European festival dates on deck in June and several major shows supporting Linkin Park, including a stop at London’s iconic Wembley Stadium.
