Thrash legends Megadeth have cycled through dozens of members over the decades, but vocalist/guitarist Dave Mustaine has remained the constant. As the band prepares for their farewell tour in support of their upcoming self-titled final studio album (dropping January 23rd), Mustaine has confirmed he intends to keep the current lineup intact, declining to invite former members back for this final run.
Speaking with Eddie Trunk, Mustaine addressed the decision directly, citing the actions of one previous member as a key factor:
“I can’t really do that, because of the behavior of one of the band members in the past. I just can’t. Because, first off, it would be unfair to the other band members if I didn’t play with them as well.”
In a separate conversation with Guitar World, Mustaine clarified his stance further:
“We’ve already done that with Marty [Friedman, ex-Megadeth guitarist.] And I mean, let’s look at the other people we’ve played with… there’s a lot of people. [Laughs] That would be a huge undertaking. I don’t think I want to do that. I’d rather keep doing what we’re doing and let the fans [experience] Megadeth music and be happy about it. It’s not ‘puppet show Megadeth.’”
The farewell tour is expected to last 3–5 years, during which fans will hear songs from the band’s long career performed by the current lineup. Mustaine’s decision is also influenced by health considerations, as he has recently opened up about his struggles with Dupuytren’s contracture, a condition that affects hand and finger mobility.
