Demon Hunter kick off their latest album exactly how fans would expect: with a commanding slapper of an opening track. “My Place In The Dirt” sets the stage for the emotional melodic metalcore journey that frontman Ryan Clark and the band have crafted, immediately pulling listeners in.
Following that, the lead single “Sorrow Light The Way” exemplifies the band’s signature sound: heavy, melodic, emotional, and at times brutally intense. The lyric “I watched my mother die, so forgive me if I haven’t the want for this weight” hits hard before giving way to a groovy breakdown, showing that the album will explore grief, societal struggles, and personal battles with raw honesty.
“Light Bends” offers a glimpse of the band’s more uplifting side, balancing heavy riffs with soaring melodic passages—perfect for new listeners looking to understand Demon Hunter’s dynamic range.
On “The Pain In Me Is Gone,” the band delivers a haunting, almost doomy ballad about grief and the burden of passing it on to loved ones. Ryan’s vocal effects occasionally evoke Alice In Chains, adding depth and melancholy to the track.
“By A Thread” tackles current societal issues with the band’s characteristic melodic metalcore intensity. Lyrically, it highlights the divisiveness of modern life and the frustration caused by misdirection from those in power, making the song resonate on both a personal and political level.
“I’m Done” offers an intriguing contrast: lyrically exhausted and weary, yet musically infectious and danceable. The chorus—“Tell me I’m not numb, hang me by my tongue, truth is no illusion but for some, show me where to run – I think I’m done”—perfectly captures the frustration of trying to make a difference in a world that refuses to listen.
The album continues with “Ouroboros,” a heavier track that ramps up energy before transitioning to softer, slower moments with “Breaking Through Me” and “Overwhelming Closure.” Demon Hunter then alternates between heavy and melodic with “Hang The Fire” and “Reflected,” building toward the album’s emotional climax.
The title track, “There Was A Light Here,” closes the album with a powerful, piano-driven ballad. It serves as a poignant reminder of the loved ones who once brightened our world, leaving an indelible light even in dark times.
Having followed Demon Hunter since their debut, it’s clear that There Was A Light Here may be the band’s strongest release to date. For newcomers or longtime fans, this album is a masterclass in the band’s sound, blending melodic metalcore, emotional depth, and lyrical honesty. Highly recommended. Personally, after reviewing so many great albums this year, I wouldn’t be surprised if this lands in my top three when all is said and done.
