The Acacia Strain guitarist and vocalist Devin Shidaker has unveiled a new musical outlet, launching the doom metal project Spirit Wound with a lengthy debut single.
Shidaker is handling every aspect of the project himself, having written, performed, recorded and produced the first Spirit Wound track, “The Light Refuses Me.” The song clocks in at more than 10 minutes and is currently available to stream through Bandcamp, with a wider release across additional platforms expected next week.
According to Shidaker, Spirit Wound grew out of a desire to continue creating music on his own terms while processing a difficult period in his life. He described the project’s first song as an intensely personal piece shaped by grief and loss.
“Continuing my commitment to writing and releasing music whenever I feel like it, this is Spirit Wound. This has been a year filled with tremendous personal loss and tragedy, and this first song, The Light Refuse Me, is grief coming through my stream of consciousness into song. Written in an afternoon this past summer, it’s doom, but it’s something different for me.”
Shidaker encouraged listeners to set aside some time for the track, noting that its full runtime stretches beyond the 10-minute mark.
“The song is live on Bandcamp now, with the link in my bio. If you’ve got 10 minutes to spare, give it a listen. Live on the other platforms next week.”
“The Light Refuses Me” marks Shidaker’s first release under the Spirit Wound name and offers a distinctly doom-oriented direction separate from his work with The Acacia Strain.
