Canadian progressive metal architect Devin Townsend has released a new single and music video titled “Home At Night”, the second preview from his long-gestating rock opera project, ‘The Moth’.
The upcoming album, due May 29 via InsideOutMusic, will be available in both standard and expanded orchestral editions. Townsend has once again collaborated with the North Netherlands National Choir and Orchestra, further pushing the project into cinematic territory.
Speaking on the new track, Townsend said:
“For the second song we release from ‘The Moth’, I present ‘Home At Night’. One of the first pieces written for the project, it came from the difficulty of being away from home with young kids and a family.”
He continued:
“The video reflects my relationship with the more ‘drama student’ side of my personality, with a healthy dose of the ‘trolololo guy’ aesthetic 🙂”
Within the narrative framework of ‘The Moth’, Townsend describes “Home At Night” as being told from the perspective of an antagonist preparing to leave for battle. He added that the broader concept centers around transformation, emotional endurance, and navigating personal upheaval.
The visual component was directed by Mike Zimmer, with the project also set to be presented in an alternate version titled ‘The Afterlife’, which places greater emphasis on the orchestral and choral arrangements.
With ‘The Moth’, Townsend continues to blur the lines between metal, classical composition, and theatrical storytelling, reinforcing his reputation as one of progressive music’s most ambitious creators.
