It’s been over seven years since Eonian, and Norwegian symphonic black metal giants Dimmu Borgir continue to take their time crafting its follow-up. While fans have waited patiently, the band’s meticulous approach to writing and recording has meant long stretches between updates.
After revealing in 2023 that eight new tracks had been demoed, Dimmu Borgir returned to the studio in late 2024 despite the departure of longtime guitarist Galder that summer. His exit paved the way for Damage (Kjell Karlsen of Chrome Division) to officially join the fold earlier this year, with the band bringing him onboard as they push forward with their tenth studio album.
Speaking to Phoenix Akuma Six at this year’s Wacken Open Air festival, guitarist Silenoz explained the reasoning behind the band’s prolonged recording process and perfectionist tendencies:
“Well, it’s always that time where you can work and work and work on it, but at the same time you have to let it go. It’s the same when you have a kid and it grows up. You have to let it out of its shell somehow, and once that’s done, yeah, then it’s done. But certain albums, we live with the songs for so many years before we actually record them. So we can go back and forth, back and forth, and when we finally then go to the main studio to record all the parts again, then we pretty much have everything set.”
“‘Cause we demo everything down to the smallest little detail before we go and record actual albums, so we can live with the songs and figure out the small tweaks here and there. Even after months and maybe even years, you can go back, and it’s, like, ‘Yeah, let’s tweak it a little bit there.’”
While no official release date or album title has been announced just yet, it’s clear the band isn’t rushing the process. With a new lineup solidified and the band back in motion, fans can only hope the next chapter of Dimmu Borgir draws nearer.
